The Unbelievable Story Of Goldust Wanting To Get Breast Implants In WWE, Explained

Quick Links

Goldust has had one of the most weird and wacky professional wrestling careers of all time, with him only just now once again finding a true identity as himself, Dustin Rhodes, now that he has joined AEW. The career of Goldust could have several books written about many of the most peculiar and crazy stories about his character, but there is one tale which sticks out in particular as one of the weirdest and most unbelievable stories perhaps in professional wrestling history. At one point in time, Goldust wanted to legitimately have the surgery to get breast implants, all in the name of his character and all in the name of WWE.

The Goldust Character Was One Of The Most Unique WWE Inventions

After getting released from WCW, Dustin Rhodes would join WWE, reinventing himself and becoming “Goldust”. It was Vince McMahon’s idea initially for the character to be androgynous. Goldust didn’t know what this meant when he accepted the role, although even after finding out, he decided to put his all into making the character work. On paper, being drenched in gold paint and a bodysuit from head to toe, wearing a blonde wig, and acting like a movie artist sounds like a dead-end gimmick with absolutely no legs. However, Goldust made it work by being charismatic, eccentric, and fully committing to the gimmick.

Goldust became a controversial character at times, playing up to more prejudice crowds in order to annoy them, with his uniqueness even leading him to appearing on talk shows. Unfortunately, due to some controversy and complaints, Goldust was made to downplay much of his sexual ambiguity, with the focus instead needing to be on his weirdness rather than his sexuality, meaning that new ways to bring the character to life were necessary. After a while, a new gimmick in which he was ‘The Artist Formerly Known As Goldust’ came to life, which would eventually lead in to the infamous breast implant story.

Goldust’s Weirdness Was Becoming Stale, So New Ideas Were Pitched

In this new role, Goldust would wear an array of obscene and crazy outfits, often bondage inspired, as he was accompanied by Luna Vachon. The shock factor of it worked for a while, with Goldust explaining in his autobiography that, “Vince gave it the go ahead, and it turned out to be awesome.” However, with most things which rely on ‘shock factor’, the shocking nature of it eventually ran dry, and the fans became bored of the seeing the same old stuff every week. It grew stale, so Goldust decided to try and find another way to keep his character alive.

To further raise the shock value of his character, and to make him unique to anything seen before in professional wrestling, Goldust decided to pitch the idea of him getting breast implants. Jim Ross would explain in JR’s Cookbook, that Goldust even wanted a film crew present, detailing that he wanted “to go under the knife and have a breast implant procedure, making him the first wrestler of this kind in history. His vision was that it would be so weird and bizarre that our fans and new fans, for that matter, would pay good money to watch him wrestle.” This could have well been the case, but thankfully, this idea was shot down.

Vince McMahon Said No To Goldust Wanting To Receive Breast Implants

After brainstorming his idea to a few WWE officials, with none of them endorsing the idea by any means, he took his pitch to Vince McMahon himself. After initially believing this to be a joke and a rib, McMahon rejected the idea and put an end to Goldust’s near obsession with making his breast implants a reality. It wouldn’t be long until Goldust was released from the WWE, with him going back to WCW for a brief time before eventually making his way back to WWE, once again as Goldust. However, the odd nature of his character was downplayed, with him going for a more comedic style of character, with notable stints such as his tag team with Booker T.

The fact that Goldust wanted to go to these lengths, even with the real-life and long-term ramifications it would have on his life outside the ring, showcased his dedication to the business. He was willing to go to any length to ensure the draw of his gimmick, even if it meant drastic changes to his life. He played up to the nickname of the ‘The Bizarre One’ both in and outside the ring, and having this sort of drive nearly always leads to success, and that is why, even without breast implants, Goldust is one of the most memorable and recognizable gimmicks in WWE history.
