Why Dusty Rhodes Never Wanted His Sons To Tag

For a short time before Dusty Rhodes passed away, he got to see his two sons team together in WWE, but he always believed it was a bad idea.

Cody Rhodes has recently been proving to the wrestling world that you don't need WWE in order to make something of yourself in the business. Vince McMahon saw the younger Rhodes brother as nothing more than a mid-carder while at WWE as Cody bounced from gimmick to gimmick, finally landing on Stardust which simply wasn't going to get him to the level he desired.

The reasoning behind turning Cody into Stardust was poorly thought out too. Despite being very different people and 16 years apart in age, Rhodes was paired up with his real-life brother Dustin, better known to the WWE Universe as Goldust. Eventually, WWE creative did exactly what most were probably expecting them to do and turned Cody into Stardust, what they wanted to be a tweaked clone of his older brother.

That's never what it was going to be and one man who knew that was Dusty Rhodes. According to an article written for The Ringer, The American Dream knew that because of how different Cody and Dustin were due to their very different upbringings, tagging them together would not end well. Unfortunately, the WWE Hall of Famer was right.

According to Cody's older sister, Teil Gergel, Dusty said that it wouldn't end well long before Cody became Stardust, and it was that transformation that confirmed him to be correct. Cody isn't one to shy away from a challenge however and he gave the Stardust gimmick his all. He went a different way with it than his older brother did with Goldust and arguably made a lot more of it than anyone would have likely expected.

“[Dusty] didn’t want them to tag … just because of their personalities and the pressure," says Gergel. "While they love each other and they’re brothers, Dad thought that was not going to end well.”

Eventually, something had to give though, and it was Cody's father Dusty that made him realize that before he passed. Dream told his son that he could either stay in WWE in the spot that he was in and make good money or he could venture away from the company and do something else. Dusty passed away shortly after that, and unfortunately, didn't get to see his son make his choice and venture out on to the independent scene and really make waves in the industry. If he was alive today though he would be incredibly proud.
