On Selling Sunset season 5, Mary Fitzgerald and Romain Bonnett's marriage hit a rough patch as they didn't see eye to eye when it came to having a child together. Mary is focused on her career in luxury real estate, while Romain wants to have a baby sooner than later. With Mary getting an early start at parenthood as a teen mom, she isn't as eager as Romain to expand her family. Their 13-year age gap appears to be catching up with them.
Mary and Romain have shared the ups and downs of their marriage since season 1. They were the first to get married on the show. and defied all the odds, despite Mary being 13 years older than the French model. Romain even started working with the company to make a living on his own and be closer to his wife. Many have questioned the close bond that Mary and Romain have with Mary's ex and boss, Jason Oppenheim. However, the "throuple" rumors were the least of their worries in season 5.
Mary and Romain were at odds through the season, with Mary even storming out during the last scene they filmed together. Fans were quick to criticize Mary for seemingly putting Romain's desires on the back burner in favor of her own. "She wanted an agreeable sugar baby and thought Romain would fall in line but the signs of their incompatibility were there from the VERY beginning," one Redditor wrote. "It seems like they’ve been dating a few months, not married for years," added someone else. Longtime fans are well aware of how badly Romain wants to have a child. It's something he and Mary have debated about since the start of their relationship.
However, when they got married, Mary agreed to have at least one child with Romain. Then, in season 5, Mary showed reluctance to undergo IVF treatments due to her busy work schedule. With Jason promoting Mary to managing partner at the agency, the last thing she wanted to do was take off from work to try and conceive a child. Mary welcomed her son when she was just 16 years of age. Now, at the age of 41, having a baby isn't a priority for her. However, since Romain is 28, he's ready to become a father for the first time. During the season, Mary was shown putting an offer in on a home without consulting Romain first. When he let her know how much that bothered him, she didn't show much remorse.
In a later scene, fans saw Mary talking about putting in another offer that she would discuss with Romain ahead of time. However, her heated exchange with her husband still hinted that there was trouble in paradise. The reality TV couple has been going strong despite all the skepticism surrounding their marriage. Mary and Romain were certainly at odds in season 5. However, hopefully, they can return to Selling Sunset season 6 on better terms.
