WWE's Best Tag Team Is A Hidden Gem

The Grizzled Young Veterans (GYV) have made their presence known on both the British and American branches of NXT, but they remain underutilized as a potential star act for the company. Every time they appear on WWE television, their quality and charisma is immediately noticeable, often having the best match on the card.

GYV are former (and the first) NXT UK Tag Team Champions, where they had notable feuds and matches with the likes of Moustache Mountain, Gallous, and 'Flash' Morgan Webster/Mark Andrews. Zack Gibson has also won the UK Championship tournament in 2018, in what was a breakout performance for him. It is fair to say that Gibson and James Drake were cornerstones in establishing NXT UK as a brand worth watching.

However, they have failed to make the same waves on NXT proper, which is a huge shame given their obvious talent. Their matches with MSK for the NXT Tag Team Championship have been some of the year's best, but they have yet to capture the gold for themselves.

The Grizzled Young Veterans are WWE's best tag team and it is about time they got the spotlight they deserve.

What Makes GYV So Good?

A hallmark of any great tag team is that the individuals who make up the tandem are often better together than they are by themselves. James Drake and Zack Gibson are excellent performers in their own right, but as a pair, they are a level above any other tag team on the WWE roster.

Zack Gibson is one of the best promos in the world, with his incendiary run-downs of the crowd being a highlight of any show that he is on. His partner, James Drake, is such an energetic presence that can pick up the pace of any match with ease. The duo complements each other perfectly, as it is obvious they have spent time honing their act over years of tagging together.

The throwback style that GYV employs also makes them a unique feature on NXT programming, with their cut-off spots and heel antics being among the best in the industry. They are in many ways comparable to one of NXT's greatest tag teams, The Revival (now FTR), as they can be the heel aces that create a basis for the rest of a division.

GYV Should Be NXT Tag Team Champions

The Grizzled Young Veterans have the ability to lead any great tag team division, so it is of paramount importance that WWE realizes this and gives them a chance with the NXT Tag Team Championships soon. This is especially the case when WWE is looking to overhaul NXT, as GYV can be the lynchpin that holds a young tag team roster together.

Having already had great matches with the likes of Legado Del Fantasma and Timothy Thatcher/Tomasso Ciampa, the next logical step for GYV would be to win the titles. Defeating MSK for the belts would be very apt too, as the two teams have formed a terrific in-ring rivalry this year.

Once GYV wins the titles they can go on a long run with them whilst NXT adjusts to its new form.

GYV Can Find Success Beyond NXT

NXT shouldn't be the end goal for GYV, as they could quite easily find success beyond the (formerly) black and yellow brand. The WWE main roster is crying out for more fully-fledged tag teams, especially ones with the pedigree of the Grizzled Young Veterans.

The main roster might be quite a daunting prospect because of how it often overlooks great tag teams, especially ones that are in the traditional mold like the GYV. This is amplified further by the fact that Gibson and Drake are English, which in the world of Vince McMahon's WWE is immediately seen as a defining characteristic of a performer. GYV would run the risk of becoming a parody of their former selves, similar to other great teams like The Revival or The Viking Experience/Raiders.

In truth, they don't even need WWE to continue their ascension to the top of the wrestling world. GYV's style is suited to all kinds of wrestling, so they could find success on any continent, under any brand. The Grizzled Young Veterans will ultimately reach a ceiling in WWE, which is why they might be best suited to exploring opportunities elsewhere.

Whatever lies in the future for GYV, they are soon to be recognized as THE best tag team in WWE and beyond.
