WWE Superstars Likely Getting An Entire Week Off At Christmas
Highlights
- WWE Superstars finally get a week off for the holidays, a rare occurrence in the non-stop world of wrestling.
- Triple H prioritizes family time for wrestlers, allowing them to attend important events and spend time with loved ones.
- Giving Superstars a break during Christmas is the least WWE can do considering their year-round work and constant schedule.
Pro wrestling lies somewhere between sports and entertainment, hence Vince McMahon insisting we refer to what WWE does as sports entertainment. However, one element of sports McMahon never wanted to replicate was the concept of seasons. That WWE would shut down for a few months a year so its Superstars could recover. The WWE machine doesn't even stop for the holidays, except this year, the first Christmas without McMahon involved in WWE's day-to-day, there appears to have been a week set aside so wrestlers can actually have some time off.
Home For The Holidays
According to Fightful Select (via Culataholic), the taping schedule WWE has in place for the build to December 25 suggests Superstars and employees will be able to spend an extended period at home with their family and friends this year. There are currently no shows scheduled between December 19 and December 25. The SmackDown this Friday will likely be a double taping, so the December 22 edition takes place directly after this week's live show and airs next week, and the Christmas Day episode of Raw will be a Best Of show.
Santa Claus' Violent History With WWE At Christmas Time, Explained
For decades, WWE has brought in Santa Claus around Christmas, making him either a sympathetic babyface or a despicable heel. That means a weekend of live events that ends on December 18, no shows for six days, and then back on the road on December 26, a holiday tradition in WWE. Some Superstars may have looked ahead this year and feared the worst when they noticed December 25 falls on a Monday. Even though this year's Christmas Raw will hopefully be a Best Of show, the last time Christmas Day was on a Monday, WWE went ahead and ran a live episode of the show.
An Onus On Family
News that WWE Superstars will seemingly have an entire week off this Christmas comes off the back of confirmation Triple H wants employees to have more time to spend with their families. Randy Orton revealed recently that ever since the health scare that led to The Game's retirement from in-ring competition, combined with his installation as head of creative, Triple H has put an onus on wrestlers not having to miss family time, including events like weddings and birthdays, which has been standard for the industry in the past.
Considering the work WWE Superstars put in the rest of the year, literally not stopping for a week off at any other time, let alone an off-season, letting them have a week off for the holidays is the least WWE can do. It's refreshing to know Triple H considers that sort of thing important, and that having him in a position of power is a good thing for WWE for more than just creative reasons.
